The Vatican has appointed a pro-LGBTI Jesuit preacher to consult on their PR.
Father James Martin is the author of Building A Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity.
The editor-at-large of America magazine, the New Yorker has used his voice to call for an inclusive Catholic Church.
The Vatican’s Secretariat for Communications, the office Martin will be working with, runs the Pope’s media output.
This includes Pope Francis’ official Twitter account, Vatican radio and TV, as well as the Holy See’s website.
‘I’m very happy to serve the church in this way,’ Martin wrote on Twitter. ”Thanks to all for the kind words and promises of prayers today.’
Martin, a contributor to The Colbert Report, previously made headlines for tweeting in support of trans people to use whatever bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity.
Following Donald Trump officially revoking federal guidance protecting trans students in US schools, Martin hit back on social media.
He said: ‘Trans students endure so many indignities already. They should be able to use whatever bathrooms they choose. It doesn’t hurt anybody.
‘It saddens me that a trans student cannot choose what bathrooms to use. A basic need. It’s an affront to their dignity as human beings.’
This was criticized by a fellow priest based in Chicago, who asked if it was a ‘parody’ account.
He is also an award-winner from the New Wave Ministry, a pro-LGBTI religious group.
