A trans woman has been shot outside her residence in Los Angeles Skid Row.
She was killed in the 500 block of South San Pedro Street, just before 2pm yesterday (23 March), the Los Angeles Times reports.
Speaking to the paper, Anita Nelson, Chief Executive of SRO Housing Corp, identified the victim as Kourtney Yochum.
According to Nelson, she was a resident of Gateway Apartments, a ‘permanent supportive housing project for formerly chronically homeless individuals’.
Police did not confirm the woman’s name.
According to the paper, she was out walking her two dogs when a man in his 20s approached her and opened fire.
Yochum was pronounced dead at the scene.
Possibly engaged in a domestic dispute with Yochum, the alleged shooter was taken into custody by a security guard before being taken into police custody.
His identity is yet unknown but Los Angeles Police Officer Tony Im said it would be released once he’d been booked by police.
‘It’s mind-boggling; it happened out in the open,’ Nelson told the LA Times.
‘I’m heartbroken. Our residents are traumatized, our staff is traumatized.
‘Everybody loved her. She was very popular.’
