KRISTINE W - THE POWER OF MUSIC - FLY AGAIN MUSIC Besides writing songs for CeCe Peniston and RuPaul, the Ultra-Luscious Dance Staple, Kristine W, has managed to rack up an impressive amount of number one singles on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play Chart since 1994, and unbelievably she has yet to crack the top of the Pop Charts. It doesn't really matter, does it? I can name quite a few popular artists that have been recording just as long with very little to show in that area. Though it is convenient in the biz to have success in the national Top 40, it's truly the fan-base that keeps an artist alive and thriving. For those of you who are not aware, Kristine W (Weitz), was 1981's Miss Washington, and paid her dues performing in Vegas, before being discovered and originally signing with RCA records. Her first formal single, "Feel What You Want," (also included with a fresh remix on the new collection) landed at the top of the Club Play Chart, and the massive hits kept right on rolling. Recently she broke the record for "continuous number ones" in that format, surpassing the almighty Madonna. Although she is often freakishly categorized as an Electronic Artist, Kristine is a certainly more than just a "Dime-Store Diva" found on a DJ's Mix collection. As a co-writer, she is in control of her career direction, and with a white-soulful voice that outshines practically anyone on the dance charts, it is no surprise that she has survived so long in the circuit. Kristine W's latest full release, "The Power of Music", streeting June 15, contains her last four hit singles as well as the soon-to-be chart topper, "Be Alright." The new single is a slight departure from her well-know club anthems, featuring blazing guitars, which showcases a rough-n-ready side of Kristine that is quite delightful. The new collection has various moods, which demonstrate how really strong her vocal abilities and song-writing credits have grown. It could very well be the right ingredients to break her big into the mainstream. Tackling an honest ballad and still bring down the house requires range and Kristine W has this capability in abundance. Who could imagine that there could be any new ground to cover in a classic track, like Ms. Ross' "The Boss." This is just one of many indulgent gems to be found on "The Power of Music." That cut is the only cover and the rest of the tracks are originals that can more than hold their own with a sound so familiar. I'd love to see her do a duet battle with Martha Walsh (Weather Girls) in a rehash of Black Box's "Strike It Up," or even a gender-bending go at Sylvester's forgotten track, "Man Enuff." That would be House-Music perfection. The reason I've singled out the before mentioned acts is because that is right where Kristine W's sound fits best. Her club tracks have all the energy of Sylvester finest grooves and that deep-rich sound of the Weather Girls vocals. I highly recommend all her full-length releases to experience the full dynamic of this often-underrated performer. Kristine W is currently on tour throughout the Mid-West at various venues and Pride Festivals.
