Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. ambassador to Belgium had a meltdown on stage because singer Katy Perry didn’t perform at the America 250 celebrations in Brussels. Ambassador Bill White was one of several people who gave a speech at the bash marking America’s 250th birthday in the European nation on Sunday, in front of thousands of invite-only guests at the public Cinquantenaire Park in Belgium’s capital.

There were also musical performances from the Zac Brown Band, despite being virtually unknown in Belgium, as well as country singer Alexis Wilkins, the girlfriend of FBI Director Kash Patel, who suffered embarrassing technical difficulties while trying to perform the U.S. national anthem.

Perry declined to perform at the MAGA event, citing contractual obligations because she was already scheduled to headline a festival that weekend. “So we were gonna have Katy Perry. Who cares?” White said, prompting some laughter from the crowd. “Karma is a bitch. You know the joke? She was gonna perform last night. She got rained out.”

President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday tapped businessperson and major political donor Bill White to serve as U.S. ambassador to Belgium. White is the founder and CEO of Constellations Group, a Manhattan-based consulting firm, and previously served as president of the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York.

White abruptly stepped down from his post leading the Intrepid in 2010 amid a probe launched by New York’s then-Attorney General Andrew Cuomo into a state pension scandal.

White allegedly acted as a middleman for investment companies hoping to win deals with the state fund, and “secretly” amassed fees from those deals — or as Cuomo put it, “used his access to fill his pockets.” White ultimately agreed to pay a $1 million settlement.

Diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Belgium are under renewed pressure after Donald Trump’s envoy lashed out over plans to prosecute two Jewish men who perform ritual circumcisions.

“This is a shameful stain on Belgium,” U.S. Ambassador Bill White wrote Wednesday on X, adding that the country would now be considered antisemitic by the world. “The Trump Administration condemns this judicial action,” White added, slamming what he described as “political inaction” by the Belgian government to find a solution.

The U.S.-Israeli fury comes after the Antwerp prosecutor confirmed it recommended two mohalim be prosecuted following investigations into alleged illegal circumcisions, which must be carried out by a medical professional according to Belgian law. Belgium’s foreign affairs minister Maxime Prevot immediately hit back at the criticism.

White appeared here last week when he sent a threatening“we know who you are” email to a US citizen because the man had asked the Zac Brown Band to pass on White’s event. 

White appeared here in 2022 when Georgia lawmakers blocked his attempt to carve out a wealthy, mostly white Atlanta neighborhood into a standalone city.
