Students at 11 Texas A&M University System schools will see fewer classes related to LGBTQ literature, climate change and women writers meet graduation requirements under a proposal to remove more than 200 classes from general-education course lists.

System regents voted Thursday to scale back the classes that qualify after a review prompted by a new state law that requires public university boards to examine what classes undergraduates must take regardless of their majors. Regents must ensure those courses “are foundational and fundamental” for a college education and that they prepare students for civic life and the workforce, according to Senate Bill 37.

Of the courses set to be removed at the flagship school are introduction to women’s and gender studies; LGBTQ literatures; introduction to Latinx literature studies; women writers; introduction to race and ethnicity; gender and health; Blacks in the United States; Bible as literature and climate change.

The bill was authored by former state Sen. Brandon Creighton (photo), who is now chancellor of Texas Tech, which banned its own LGBTQ courses in April 2026 at his direction.

Creighton, the former president of the Texas Senate, appeared here in August 2025 when the ACLU sued to block his successful K-12 “Don’t Say Gay” law.

He appeared here in June 2025 for his bill requiring students to produce an ID in order to participate in campus protests.

Also in June 2025, Creighton appeared here for his bill that would defund blue cities over “liberal policies” such as LGBTQ rights.

He appeared here in April 2025 for his bill that would force colleges to rewrite history texts to remove mentions of “social, political or economic inequalities” in the United States. 

Creighton first appeared on JMG in 2019 for his bill seeking to overturn LGBTQ protections enacted by Texas cities. 

In March 2023, he appeared here for his bill that would deny the prospect of tenure to newly-hired university professors. 

Creighton has spearheaded the Texas campaign to protect Confederate monuments. He appeared here in August 2023 for his bill that forced the closure of the University of Houston’s LGBTQ Resource Center.
