GLBT Historical Society Honors Poet, Artist, Preacher, and Storyteller Marvin K. White October 17

Gary Carnivele October 13, 2026

Saturday, October 17, 2026
The Westin St. Francis, San Francisco
Cocktails: 6:00 p.m. | Dinner: 7:00 p.m.
We’re thrilled to announce the second of our 2026 History Maker Honorees, Marvin K. White, Minister of Celebration at Glide Memorial Church and founder of tendesf: art gallery and artpothecary.

Born and raised in Oakland, Marvin has performed nationally and internationally as a member of the acclaimed theater troupe PomoAfroHomos and has presented his original work at numerous theaters, bringing his poetic voice into live performance and collective storytelling. His four poetry collections include the Lambda Literary Award–nominated last rights and nothin’ ugly fly, and he helped found and served on the boards of Fire & Ink and B/GLAM, organizations supporting Black and LGBTQ writers.

His work spans the pulpit, the page, the stage, and the gallery. Through storytelling, spiritual inquiry, and creative expression, he affirms, restores, and liberates collective Black, queer dignity and possibility. Today, Marvin works, lives, and makes art within a six-block area of San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood.

Reunion honors those who deepen our understanding of LGBTQ+ history and culture, and few embody the spirit of the History Maker Award like Marvin. Join us to celebrate his vision of social, prophetic, and creative justice — and raise a toast to all that is still to come.
