In 1994, a Missouri high school teacher named Rodney Wilson – the first out public school teacher in the state – wanted to give students better access to LGBTQ history as well as more role models with whom they could identify. He established a planning committee with LGBTQ leaders from around the country, and from there, Gay and Lesbian History Month was born. California Gov. vetoes STI health bill that would have helped LGBTQ people

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has vetoed a bill that would have helped low-income LGBTQ people gain easier access to treatment and prevention services for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Newsom said he supported the STI Prevention & Treatment Fairness Act, but that there simply wasn’t enough funding to accomplish what it sought to do. The NBA has fined basketball star Anthony Edwards $40,000 for using an anti-gay slur. The player for the Minnesota Timberwolves found himself in hot water earlier this month after a video on his Instagram story depicted him mocking a group of men standing on the sidewalk. A Black trans woman says her housing complex discriminated against her family and refused to respect her gender identity. Shayla Anderson and her husband have filed a lawsuit accusing the Grand Fountain apartment complex in Richmond, Texas of discrimination. “I went to her office, and she said, ‘I’m not going to speak with you about this,’” Anderson told KPRC. “‘I’m not going to speak with you about this, sir.’” “She took my womanhood and crushed it by calling me sir.” From there, Anderson reached out to the company in charge of the apartment complex, SunRidge Management Group, who never got back to […]

Dede Ricks is the second Black trans woman killed in Detroit in a month

A 33-year-old Black trans woman was fatally shot in Detroit last week, becoming the second trans woman in a month to be murdered there. On August 27, Dede Ricks was pronounced dead at the scene after police found her on the ground with gunshot wounds to her chest and back, The Detroit News reported. Thirty-one-year-old Antoine Close has been arrested for killing Ricks and charged with second-degree murder and felony firearm possession. A food distribution program run by an Iowa LGBTQ couple was almost sabotaged by a fake volunteer – but the community rallied to save the day. Every month, Together We Achieve holds a food box giveaway event in which it passes out over 1000 boxes of food to those in need.
