Trans LGBTQ+ activist shot dead in Baltimore remembered as ‘incredible person’

Trans woman Meghan Riley Lewis, who was shot dead in Bel Air, has been remembered as an “incredible person”.  On Wednesday (27 December), Lewis, who was a mum-of-two, was shot and killed in the parking lot of her apartment complex.  Brian Delen, 47, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, first-degree assault and firearms charges in relation to the incident. He is currently being held without bond. USA Cycling to segregate trans athletes in updated policy

USA Cycling has updated its trans athlete participation policy, segregating trans athletes who wish to compete across domestic races in the US into two new categories.  The governing body for cycling in the United States has updated its policy, aligning itself with standards set by the world cycling governing body, Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). Philadelphia becomes safe haven for trans people seeking gender-affirming healthcare

Philadelphia has become a safe haven for trans people seeking gender-affirming healthcare. On Tuesday (17 October), mayor Jim Kenney signed an executive order at City Hall, giving anyone who goes to the state access to treatment. New study finds decline in UK trans acceptance: ‘A shift that benefits no one’

Findings from 40 years of the British Social Attitudes (BSA) survey, which was published by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) on Thursday (21 September), revealed insights into cultural and moral views in the UK.  Although the BSA was founded in 1983, questions regarding transgender people were first asked only seven years ago.  The BSA 2022 survey consisted of 6,638 interviews, conducted between 7 September and 30 October, and results showed a sharp rise in prejudice against trans people, with only 64 per cent saying they’re “not at all prejudice”, falling from 82 per cent since 2019.  Also according to the […]

More than half of LGBTQ+ social media users are turning their backs on mainstream platforms over toxicity and safety concerns, a new report indicates. Kansas to force trans people to reverse gender markers on birth certificates and driving licenses

A Kansas law will reverse gender markers on trans people’s birth certificates and driving licences, in a move deemed “disastrous” for those affected. On Monday (26 June), state attorney general Kris Kobach confirmed to reporters that the new law – Senate Bill 180 – which takes effect from 1 July, will legally erase trans people’s gender identities.  The Republican-controlled legislature enacted the law despite Democratic governor Laura Kelly vetoing it in April. LGBTQ+ elders feel ‘excluded and isolated’ in a community ‘geared towards younger people’, study finds

A UK-based charity dedicated to LGBTQ+ people over 50 has revealed that many feel “excluded and isolated” in a community “geared towards younger people”. Research by Opening Doors found people over the age of 50 “especially within the gay community” feel less visible due to being less likely to have “familial networks”.  Due to “distrust in the system”, the charity also found that older people often go without help from external support networks.  John Campbell, who identifies as androsexual, said his experience as an older LGBTQ+ person has been “trying at times, owing to the amount of emotional trauma”.  ‘I feel excluded’  […]

Austrian police arrest three suspected Islamic extremists over Vienna Pride terror attack plot

Austrian police have foiled a potential terror attack at Vienna Pride after arresting three suspects with alleged links to Islamic extremism.  Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, from Austria’s State Protection and Intelligence Directorate (DSN), told journalists on Sunday (18 June) that three suspects were arrested on suspicion of plotting a terror attack at the event, according to CNN.  The suspects, aged 14, 17 and 20, are Austrian nationals of Bosnian and Chechen origin and were arrested by Austria’s Cobra special forces ahead of the parade on Saturday.   Vienna Pride, which ran from 1 June to 18, was attended by about 300,000 people this […]

Warning of terrorism attacks on LGBTQ+ community during 2024 presidential race

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has warned that the LGBTQ+ community is at risk of terrorism attacks during the 2024 US presidential race. The DHS’ announcement, published on 24 May and set to expire on 24 November, states that the “United States remains in a heightened threat environment”.
