Publisher Keith St Clare who published the San Francisco-based magazine Vanguard Has Died

Keith St Clare, editor and publisher of the groundbreaking LGBTQ+ magazine Vanguard, has died at age 79. He died March 25 in Richmond, Texas, where he was in an assisted living facility, according to The Bay Area Reporter. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease several years ago, his family said. Vanguard, based in San Francisco, was originally published by an organization of the same name, beginning in 1965. The Vanguard group assisted young people, LGBTQ+ and otherwise, in the city’s Tenderloin district. St Clare took over the magazine in 1966, and the organization ceased operations the following year. A federal judge has again blocked Iowa’s ban on certain books from public school classrooms and libraries. U.S. District Judge Stephen Locher ruled Tuesday that the ban on books depicting sex acts was likely unconstitutional and issued a preliminary injunction preventing its enforcement while the lawsuit against it continues, the Associated Press reports. Disney shareholders have voted overwhelmingly to continue the company’s participation in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index, which measures businesses’ support for LGBTQ+ causes and on which Disney has consistently received perfect scores. Holders of only 1 percent of shares voted in favor of a right-wing group’s proposal that Disney pull out of the index, according to multiple media outlets,meaning that 99 percent supported participation. Mark Gordon, a Republican, has signed a bill into law allowing people to sue if they encounter a member of the opposite sex — which, as defined by the bill, includes any transgender person — in certain single-sex, multi-occupancy restrooms or changing rooms, or if they have to share sleeping quarters with one in a state prison. Both are encouraging shareholders to vote against resolutions asking them to reevaluate their commitment to DEI.
