Sonoma State University Department of Theatre Arts & Dance presents “The Hummingbird Wars” written by Carter Lewis and directed by Judy Nava. Time Warped: How ‘Rocky Horror’ Got It Right 40 Years Ago

This year we are celebrating 40 years of The Rocky Horror Picture Show an incredible cult classic famous for its tongue in cheek humour and, well, Tim Curry in fish nets. The musical is a satirical acknowledgement of science fiction and horror movies, but not only that, Rocky Horror recognises and draws upon the issues of sexuality and gender that mocks society’s attitudes towards these matters. Sadly for some reason it has taken 40 year for parts of society to even truly consider taking a page out of Rocky Horror’s book, and begin to accept sexuality and gender fluidity. […]

Book Review: ‘The One That Got Away’ by Carol Rosenfeld

In The One That Got Away, Carol Rosenfeld’s debut novel, wedding planning—the stuff of cotton candy-spun dreams—serves as the backdrop for the romantic longings of Bambi Devine—B.D. to her friends—who earns her living in the industry. B.D. has recently come out, although, as is often the case, she is the last of her friends to know. No matter. She now knows, and throughout this up-close-and-personal first-person novel, she explores life options and lesbian lingerie from her middle-aged dyke vantage. She has an eye for detail, which she uses to help would-be brides and grooms select place settings and silver for […]

Book Review: ‘Gay Directors, Gay Films?: Pedro Almodóvar, Terence Davies, Todd Haynes, Gus Van Sant, John Waters’ by Emanuel Levy

For me, it began with Volver. I went with my mother (of course) when it came out. I felt as though I was returning home, though I’d never been to this world before. Who were these fulgent women in red? Who was this director, and what was this physical and emotional place where kitschy interior furnishings, high heels, loud fights, kinky sex and sobbing could conjure a mix of joy and total devastation? The answers, respectively, were Penelope Cruz and Carmen Maura, Pedro Almodóvar, and “Almodovaria,” what the film critic A.O. Scott once defined as a “syndrome” inspired by the […]

Film Review: Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party

It looks like Henry is going to start his 17th birthday in heaven. Well, his idea of what it may be. He’s having a sleepover with his best friend Gabe and as they lie in bed together almost naked they start fantasizing about sex. Whilst Gabe talks about lusting after some girl, Henry is also lusting too as they both masturbate under the covers, but he keeps the object of his desire to himself as its actually Gabe. When the day starts off downstairs as the family start to assemble we slowly discover that the birthday boy is not the […]

Legendary Performers Grasp On To 2015

Five of the following artists I am featuring have built a legacy in the music business. For some performers there comes a time when they become an Icon and an inspiration for others. They have made such an impact with their work that it defines a decade and even a genre of music. Some artists of this magnitude survive their entire career changing with the times and some stick with what they do best and still gain the respect well deserved. Wrong choices are sometimes made and they fall out of public favor and sadly have only themselves to blame. […]

Shakespeare in the Park!

Pegasus Theater Company is pleased to present William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as the inaugural performance at the newly-opened Riverkeeper Stewardship Park in downtown Guerneville. Yes, it’s in iambic pentameter (incidentally, so is your heartbeat). It also uses archaic language and everybody knows that there may be jokes that only an English teacher could love. Nobody, though, really needs this play translated; we all instinctually understand what deep meaning it has: Namely, sex. It is a play about choosing who we want to have sex with and when. The play is also about flaunting your disrespect for autocratic authority […]

“Out to Kill” Acts Up as Gay Whodunnit

Within a few minutes of the opening sequence of Rob Williams latest gay ‘boy-lit’ drama you know exactly who everybody will be out to kill. Narcissistic pretty boy singer Justin James thinks the world revolves him, and it certainly seems to in this loft apartment complex packed head to toe with insecure gay men in Tampa. Florida. Besides himself there is only one other person who actually likes him as he seems to go out of his way just to annoy everyone else he seems to come across especially if he thinks they want to get into his pants. […]
