What Do Canadian Separatists Want for LGBTQ People? Albertans May Soon Find Out
On a Friday afternoon in February, Teresa McCleary and Rose Milner sat near the entrance to Calgary’s Boddums Up Pub, collecting signatures for a petition pushing for Alberta—which is widely recognized as Canada’s most conservative province—to separate from the rest of the country. “I want the old Alberta back. I want our free Alberta back. … We are a cash cow for the East. They don’t care about us,” says McCleary, who sported a baseball cap with the words “I am Albertan!” As for Milner, she feels Canada is becoming “communist.” “Bring back the ‘60s,” she told Uncloseted Media and GAY TIMES. The Pacific Daily News reports: With rainbow flags, hats and banners on display, Guam opened Pride Month Monday morning with a proclamation ceremony and flag raising at the Ricardo J. Bordallo Governor’s Complex in Adelup. It marks the start of a monthlong observance focused on inclusion, visibility and community support. Gov. Lourdes Leon Guerrero and Lt. Gov. Tenorio, who made history in 2018 as the first openly gay lieutenant governor on the island, joined […]
45 years later, queer choruses still help LGBTQ+ youth find hope
On a rehearsal night in 1981, a group of singers in Washington, D.C., gathered to do something that sounds simple now, but was anything but simple then — they stood together and sang, publicly and proudly, as gay men. Some of their names could appear in a concert program. Some could not. Being associated publicly with a gay organization in the nation’s capital carried real risk. In a time when being known as queer could cost someone a job, a family, a home, or a future, they came together anyway. Stay up to date with the latest in LGBTQ+ news […]
CT Gov. Ned Lamont Issues Pride Month Proclamation
Governor Ned Lamont today announced that he has signed a proclamation designating June as LGBTQ Pride Month in recognition of the contributions of Connecticut’s LGBTQ community and to emphasize that the state supports the rights of every person to live their lives free of discrimination, fear, and prejudice, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. “Connecticut has a legacy of leading the nation on critical issues facing the LGBTQ+ community and being one of the most welcoming states in the country, and I am proud to let everyone know that in this state we celebrate the rights of everyone […]
Italian Catholic Scouts group to allow LGBTQ+ leaders for first time
Italy’s Catholic Scouts is set to allow LGBTQ+ Scout leaders to join the group for the first time ever as it updates its outdated selection criteria. The council for the Italian Association of Catholic Guides and Scouts, also known as AGESCI, announced the change in a document shared on 28 May. “AGESCI has reached the conclusion that… emotional orientation and gender identity cannot constitute exclusion criteria in the discernment that community leaders are called upon to exercise when an adult requests to join the association to play an educational role,” the document said. It went on to say that the teaching of being […]
More gay and bi men in the UK are donating blood than ever before
Gay and bisexual men in England are donating blood in larger numbers than ever before, a new survey has shown. The surge follows a change in the eligibility criteria for England, Scotland and Wales that was introduced in 2021. In the 1980s, queer men were completely banned from donating blood to prevent the transmission of HIV after the AIDS crisis. In 2011, the ban was then lifted, but queer men wanting to donate had to adhere to strict rules, including a requirement to abstain from having sex with another man for 12 months prior. That period was then reduced to three months in 2017. Matt Hancock, […]
KY Gov. Andy Beshear Issues Pride Month Proclamation
Louisville’s ABC affiliate reports: Kentucky’s governor signed a proclamation Friday recognizing June as Pride Month. Gov. Andy Beshear was the first sitting Kentucky governor to recognize June as Pride Month, according to the governor’s office. “I believe all children are children of God – no exceptions, no asterisks,” he said. “I made a pledge to fight for every single Kentuckian, every single day. Our LGBTQ+ community deserves to have their rights protected, and I will always stand firm on my values of compassion, empathy and doing what’s right to protect them.” In 2025, global organization Out Leadership recognized Kentucky as the […]
Pride is patriotism. LGBTQ+ Americans aren’t backing down
As we begin Pride Month in the year of our lord 2026, I’m not going to mince words: it’s hard out here for our community. Everywhere we turn, from state legislatures to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, we face an endless stream of lies and vitriol and, even worse, dangerous policies. Our healthcare, our history, and our families are all under attack. Trans kids are used as scapegoats for the failures of those in power. Our opposition is hungry to turn back the clock on all our progress, including marriage equality. Stay up to date with the latest in LGBTQ+ news with The Advocate’s email newsletter, in your […]
