As countries tighten anti-gay laws, more LGBTQ migrants seek safety and asylum in Europe

Ella Anthony knew it was time to leave her native Nigeria when she escaped an abusive, forced marriage only to face angry relatives who threatened to turn her in to police because she was gay. Since Nigeria criminalizes same-sex relationships, Anthony fled a possible prison term and headed with her partner to Libya in 2014 and then Italy, where they both won asylum. Their claim? That they had a well-founded fear of anti-LGBTQ persecution back home. While many of the hundreds of thousands of migrants who arrive in Italy from Africa and the Mideast are escaping war, conflict and poverty, an […]

Denver’s PrideFest Celebrates 50th Anniversary This Summer

Denver PrideFest, one of the nation’s premier LGBTQ+ events, will celebrate its 50th anniversary June 22-23, 2024. The two-day festival unites communities from across Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region as the parade, run and festival attracted an estimated 550,000 people to downtown Denver in 2023. Since its inception, Denver PrideFest has been a celebration of unity, inclusion and progress among the LGBTQ+ community and allies. The first LGBTQ+ pride celebration in Denver was held in 1974 as a small gathering in Cheesman Park organized by members of the Imperial Court of the Rocky Mountain Empire. Excitement from that first parade […]

Congress replaces statue of white supremacist with statue of anti-LGBTQ+ zealot

,

This week, Congress will replace a statue of a white supremacist with one of a queerphobe… and its unveiling ceremony on Thursday will likely be attended by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R), who has ties to anti-LGBTQ+ Christian nationalists. A statue of influential anti-LGBTQ+ evangelical Christian Rev. Billy Graham statue will replace one of former North Carolina Gov. Charles Aycock (D). Aycock was an early 20th-century education advocate and slave owner who sought to permanently disenfranchise and subjugate Black voters. He said Black people contributed nothing to society, despite America’s wealth being built on the backs of unpaid Black labor. […]

Donald Trump says he’ll revoke Joe Biden’s protections for trans people ‘on day one’

,

If Donald Trump wins the presidency in November, he will reverse President Joe Biden’s transgender protections “on day one” of a new Trump administration, the Republican nominee said Friday. Trump made the remark on Kayal & Company, a right-wing radio talk show in Philadelphia. “The world is like a cuckoo’s nest right now,” he said, referring to “men playing in women’s sports,” among other transphobicthings. Cohost Dawn Stensland raised the issue of “biological boys” in girls’ locker rooms as a result of the Biden administration’s recent rule on the enforcement of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the law banning sex discrimination in federally funded educational […]

What happens to homeless LGBTQ+ youth when the shelters are out of beds?

The following is an excerpt from “Making Room” by Carl Siciliano,  founder of the Ali Forney Center, the largest agency dedicated to LGBTQ homeless youth in the country. In the eighties and nineties, queer people were considered largely untouchable by mainstream politicians. Republicans at their best ignored us, and at their worst scapegoated us to win the conservative Christian vote. Democrats were less inclined to attack us, but kept us at arm’s length, like some embarrassing relative you tolerate at necessary holiday functions. Even as late as 2012, Barack Obama, the champion of “hope and change,” refused to endorse our right to […]

The queerest education in America: How LGBTQ+ kids thrive at this Indiana school

,

It’s 7:45 a.m. on an uncharacteristically warm late February Monday in Indiana, and eager students are trickling into school an hour early – not because they have to, but because they want to. In the softly lit dawn of South Bend, an industrial Midwestern city aspiring for urban renewal, there’s a school that’s rewriting the story of what it’s like to grow up queer in America. A sanctuary for LGBTQ+ kids Inside the walls of what was once a grand church – complete with steeple and bell tower – sits River Montessori High School. This space, once a key site for the […]

Judge strikes down NY county’s ban on female transgender athletes after roller derby league sues

A New York judge on Friday struck down a Long Island county’s order banning female transgender athletes after a local women’s roller derby league challenged it. Judge Francis Ricigliano ruled that Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman didn’t have the authority to issue his February executive order, which denies park permits to any women’s and girl’s teams, leagues or organizations that allow female transgender athletes to participate. He wrote in his 13-page decision that Blakeman’s order was aimed at preventing transgender women from participating in girls’ and women’s athletics in county parks, “despite there being no corresponding legislative enactment” providing him with such authority. “In doing so, […]

LGBTQ anti-discrimination laws have public support: Arizona none

Twenty-two states have comprehensive LGBTQ+ civil rights laws on the books. Arizona, though, is not one of them. The fight to pass an anti-discrimination bill is now more than twenty years old here. Since at least 2002, Arizona lawmakers—mostly Democrats, but also some Republicans—have repeatedly introduced bills that would include sexual orientation and gender identity among the state’s protected classes, such as race, sex, and religion. And although those bills varied in scope, they would have generally protected LGBTQ+ people from discrimination in employment, housing, or public accommodations. But none of those bills went anywhere. Instead, protection within the state […]

California surfing competition told it must let trans woman compete

,

A surfing competition has been told to let transgender women compete or risk a violation of a local law. A two-day surf contest is set to take place in Huntington Beach, California, this weekend (11 May), but, in a decision that has divided opinion, contest organisers informed Australian trans surfer Sasha Jane Lowerson that she could not take part.  The California Coastal Commission has said local events that ban trans women from participating in the women’s division could face being shut down.  Lowerson said she applied for the competition as she fitted within criteria set by the International Surfing Association with regard […]
