The state of Idaho has been ordered to pay $321,224.50 in legal fees because of an anti-transgender law it passed in 2020 that had already been ruled unconstitutional. In 2018, U.S. Magistrate Judge Candy Dale ruled that it was unconstitutional for the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (IDHW) to completely block transgender people from correcting the gender marker on their birth certificates. A Republican Congress member from Arizona is getting sued for using a picture of his male primary opponent with a male friend and implying that they are a gay couple. The lawsuit involves a mailer sent by the campaign for Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ) as well as some street signs about one of his primary opponents, Republican and car insurance company founder Elijah Norton. The mailers and signs used a 2018 picture of Norton with his friend Leslie Hammon, 34, where they’re outside of a bar and have arms around each other’s shoulders. Hammon is gay. Conservatives have spent the last several months denouncing LGBTQ teachers as “groomers” and pedophiles, with rightwing pundits often saying that they believe that talking to children about LGBTQ issues can turn kids gay. It turns out that a large number of Republicans believe that teachers can actually make children turn queer. 40% of Republican adults said that they believe teachers can influence students’ sexuality and gender identity, according to a new Morning Consult poll.
