“A fighting chance”: Trans rights are in the balance in the midterm elections

,

Trans people’s rights are a top concern among LGBTQ Nation readers this year.  Last month, we asked you what your main concerns are for the 2026 midterms and what you think they could change. Quite a few people discussed trans rights, which have been under attack for the past several years.  “Like all trans people in the US right now, the relentless attacks, both through real action and through political messaging, have had a profound impact on my own health and wellbeing,” Ellie Spoering told LGBTQ Nation. “I don’t have any trans friends who are not feeling the impact of these attacks, especially […]

BOYCOTT: Hobby Lobby is funding the latest push to end marriage equality

,

Earlier this year, a group of 47 anti-LGBTQ+ organizations launched a new campaign to end marriage equality in the U.S., demanding that the Supreme Court overturn Obergefell v. Hodges. The campaign, called “Greater Than” – a response to the push for equality by claiming that straight people are “greater than” queer people – immediately got the media’s attention. Now the Seattle Times has revealed that a key organization behind the Greater Than campaign is being funded by the conservative Christian business Hobby Lobby, the same business that got the Supreme Court to rule in 2014 that for-profit corporations don’t have to pay for employees’ health care […]

European Parliament adopts measure to ban conversion therapy

,

The European Parliament voted in favor of a ban on conversion therapy this Wednesday. The demand is now being sent to the European Commission for a response. The move comes after the European Citizens’ Initiative successfully petitioned the European Parliament to take up the issue. Starting in 2024, the ECI gathered over 1.2 million signatures from EU citizens to ban conversion therapy. The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) held a debate on the matter earlier this week, which resulted in the committee adopting two opinions, one calling for stronger enforcement of the EU’s LGBTIQ+ Equality Strategy 2026–2030 and the […]

Botswana officially removed its anti-sodomy law from its Penal Code

,

Botswana’s anti-sodomy law has been officially repealed. Section 164 of the Southern African nation’s Penal Code used to ban sodomy and carried a possible seven-year sentence with it. But in 2019, the country’s High Court ruled unanimously that the law was unconstitutional. “Human dignity is harmed when minority groups are marginalized,” wrote Judge Michael Leburu for the court at the time. “Sexual orientation is not a fashion statement. It is an important attribute of one’s personality.” “Personal autonomy on matters of sexual preference and choice must, therefore, be respected. Any criminalization of love or finding fulfillment in love dilutes compassion and […]

Green Party presidential candidate posts extreme antisemitic & transphobic image to social media

,

Cynthia McKinney, who was a member of Congress and the Green Party’s 2008 presidential candidate, posted an antisemitic and transphobic infographic to social media that claims Jewish people are “behind the rise in transgenderism.” The image shows a rainbow-colored Star of David with pictures of several trans rights leaders and points out that they’re Jewish, including NCTE founder Mara Keisling and GLSEN director Eliza Byard, who isn’t transgender. Non-Jewish trans rights leaders are not included in the image.  At the top of the star is Magnus Hirschfeld, the gay, Jewish, and German sexologist born in the mid-1800s who was a […]

Democrats would probably get more votes if they abandoned trans people. But they haven’t.

,

A new poll shows – like many recent polls – that the public has turned largely against transgender people’s rights.  The poll from the liberal publication The Argument found broad opposition to transgender rights among U.S. registered voters, with only around a third of Americans supporting letting trans kids get puberty blockers with parental consent and a doctor’s recommendation. Over half supported requiring trans people to use the restroom associated with their sex assigned at birth. And a large majority – 60% – supported trans sports bans. This poll isn’t an outlier. Recent polling has shown that even people who voted for Democratic Presidential nominee […]

Indiana GOP lawmakers pass “most extreme anti-LGBTQ+ bill” as protestors explained how it’s unworkable

,

A bill that is being called the “most extreme anti-LGBTQ+ bill” in Indiana was passed by the state’s Senate last week. S.B. 182 contains several provisions. First, it defines sex and gender in terms of reproductive organs and applies that definition to all laws in the state. Second, it says that trans students can only use the restrooms associated with their sex assigned at birth. Moreover, it allows students to sue schools if a trans classmate breaks this rule. Third, it forces jails and prisons to house trans inmates with their sex assigned at birth.  Indiana already passed several anti-trans […]

The far right thinks kids are property, not people. This is the heart of the anti-trans moral panic.

,

Secretary of Education Linda McMahon got to the heart of the moral panic over trans kids in a statement earlier this week, where she attacked California for protecting trans kids from getting forcibly outed to their parents: “Children do not belong to the State—they belong to families. We will use every available mechanism to hold California accountable for these practices and restore parental rights.”  That is, the right sees children as property, and, to them, the only debate is whose property they are. The possibility that they’re actually human beings who belong to no one is simply unthinkable. Liberals, on the other hand, […]

Democrats should kick the three transphobes who voted for MTG’s bill out of the caucus

,

Three Democrats crossed party lines yesterday to vote for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) bill to ban gender-affirming care for trans youth, and the party needs to kick them out. Reps. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Vincente Gonzalez Jr (D-TX), and Don Davis (D-NC) all voted alongside 213 Republicans yesterday to pass Greene’s anti-trans bill. If they had not voted for it, it would not have passed. Yes, Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE) is generally right that the party needs to be a “big tent” and allow some ideological diversity. But there are some lines that should not be crossed, and this is one of […]
