D.C. police consider hate crimes charges for suspect arrested after second vandalism attack on Little Gay Pub

The Metropolitan Police Department has arrested a suspect they believe is responsible for two incidents of vandalism targeting the Little Gay Pub, a popular LGBTQ+ venue in Washington, D.C.’s Logan Circle neighborhood.  Known for its enthusiastic support of Vice President Kamala Harris, its celebration of LGBTQ+ history, its roster of high-profile visitors, and its perfect bathroom selfies, the pub was defaced earlier this month in what police are investigating as potential hate crimes. Anti-LGBTQ+ hate crimes rose in 2023, even while crime decreased overall: FBI report

Anti-LGBTQ+ hate crimes increased in 2023 in the U.S. despite a drop in crime overall. There were 2,402 recorded incidents relating to a victim’s sexual orientation in 2023, up from 1,947 the year before, and 547 relating to the victim’s gender identity, compared with 469 in 2022, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s latest crime statistics report, released Monday. The gender identity category included 401 incidents that were specifically anti-transgender and 146 that targeted someone who was gender-nonconforming. Gay student assaulted after year-long bullying at California high school

A 17-year-old gay student at Ruben S. Ayala High School in Chino Hills, Calif., was injured after being assaulted by another student, the culmination of what the student and his mother say is a year-long battle against bullying, discrimination, and administrative inaction. Lesbian firefighter awarded $1.3 million from Kansas City after 21 years of harassment

A Kansas City firefighter was the victim of harassment from her coworkers for over two decades. Now, she’s finally getting her deserved compensation.  The City Council’s finance committee recommended without comment Tuesday that Rebecca Reynolds receive a $1.3 million settlement in response to over 21 years of mistreatment and abuse from her male coworkers and superiors. The council approved the settlement Thursday, making it the largest discrimination payout in city fire department history. Indiana judge blocks law denying gender-affirming care to prisoners, ruling it’s likely unconstitutional

A federal judge inIndiana has granted a preliminary injunction requiring the Indiana Department of Correction to provide gender-affirming surgery fortransgender inmate Autumn Cordellioné.  The decision comes after Cordellioné, a trans woman currently incarcerated in a facility for men, challenged the constitutionality of Indiana’s 2023 law banning gender-affirming surgeries for prisoners. United States District Court Judge Richard L. Young ruled on Tuesday that the state’s ban on gender-affirming surgery likely violates the Constitution’s Eighth Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment because the care is deemed necessary. Republicans want colleges to fund student religious groups that discriminate against LGBTQ+ peers

The Republican-controlled U.S. House passed a bill Thursday that would require public colleges and universities to recognize and fund student religious groups even if they discriminate against LGBTQ+ people and others, drawing condemnation from the Congressional Equality Caucus and others.
