Meta has guidelines to protect against anti-trans content. GLAAD says the company is ignoring them

GLAAD is calling on Meta, the parent company of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, to take stronger action against anti-transgender content, submitting a public statement to Meta’s Oversight Board that urges the company to enforce its policies on hate speech and bullying.  The advocacy group’s involvement comes as the Oversight Board reviews two cases in which Meta failed to remove videos from Facebook and Instagram that misgendered transgender people despite being flagged multiple times for violating the platform’s policies. Judge partially halts Idaho’s anti-trans care law

A federal judge Wednesday granted a partial injunction against Idaho’s law prohibiting the use of public funds and facilities to provide gender-affirming careand certified a class of transgender inmates to challenge the law in court. The lawsuit Robinson v. Labrador was filed by two trans inmates, represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho and the national ACLU, to challenge House Bill 668. The lawsuit argues that the denial of gender-affirming care to incarcerated citizens is a violation of their Eighth Amendment rights prohibiting cruel and unusual punishment. The Trevor Project receives $5M grant to support LGBTQ+ youth mental health in rural Midwest

The Trevor Project and the Helmsley Charitable Trust announced on Tuesday the trust awarded Trevor $5 million to support a campaign in support of LGBTQ+ youth in the rural Midwest. It comes after the Trevor Project found young queer youth are more than four times more likely to attempt suicide in rural areas than their peers. Across the country, every 45 seconds, it’s estimated that at least one LGBTQ+ youth attempts suicide, according to the group. American Bar Association files brief supporting legal challenge to Tennessee’s transgender health care ban

The American Bar Association has filed a friend-of-the-court brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the challenge to Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for trans minors. “Equal protection forbids differential treatment in the exercise of important constitutional rights absent the strongest justification, and Tennessee’s [Senate Bill 1] cannot withstand scrutiny under that standard,” says the ABA brief, filed Tuesday. Census Bureau to test questions to better represent the LGBTQ+ community

The U.S. Census Bureau is testing questions about sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) on the American Community Survey (ACS). The bureau received approval from the White House Office of Management and Budget on July 11 following a brief period to receive public comment on the questions, the Bay Area Reporter reported. The announcement follows through on a commitment by President Joe Biden during Pride Month two years ago when he issued a directive to federal agencies directing them to find ways to better gauge and serve the LGBTQ+ community. Thousands will march for trans visibility in D.C. Saturday

Thousands of transgender and nonbinary people — and their allies — will gather in Washington, D.C., Saturday for the National Trans Visibility March. The march, which has been held annually since 2019, focuses on the need for trans visibility in politics as well as society at large. Black transgender Air Force veteran Vanity Williams shot to death in Houston

Vanity Williams, a 34-year-old Black transgender woman who had recently started nursing school, was shot to death August 3 in the lobby of her apartment building in Houston. Williams’s friends are remembering her fondly, and they say they don’t know why anyone would want to kill her. But Tristian Sanders, 26, a man who police say was known to Williams, was arrested a week later and charged with murder. She was found in the lobby suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
