Dede Ricks is the second Black trans woman killed in Detroit in a month

A 33-year-old Black trans woman was fatally shot in Detroit last week, becoming the second trans woman in a month to be murdered there. On August 27, Dede Ricks was pronounced dead at the scene after police found her on the ground with gunshot wounds to her chest and back, The Detroit News reported. Thirty-one-year-old Antoine Close has been arrested for killing Ricks and charged with second-degree murder and felony firearm possession. Mutilated body of missing trans person found hidden in killer’s home

A man has been arrested for the murder of a trans woman in India, after a piece of her body was found in his home. Virginia district may ask trans students to show ‘criminal records’ to use the bathroom

A Virginia school district adopted a policy this week potentially requiring transgender students to submit a significant amount of evidence, including “disciplinary” or “criminal” records, to school administrators in order to use the restroom that aligns with their gender identity.  The Hanover County School Board approved the new policy in a 5-2 vote on Tuesday, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Federal court rules Americans with Disabilities Act protects trans people from discrimination

A federal court of appeals judge ruled Tuesday that transgender people are protected from discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act. As The Hill reports, the ruling stems from a 2020 lawsuit filed on behalf of a transgender woman who was incarcerated in a Virginia men’s prison despite the fact that she had been receiving hormone replacement therapy for nearly two decades. Conservatives sue school for refusing to out transgender students

The right-leaning group Parents Defending Education (PDE) has sued the Linn-Mar Community School District of Iowa because its policies protect transgender students from transphobic parents and students. PDE supports banning LGBTQ books and curricula about institutional racism from schools. The organization has also previously partnered with the anti-LGBTQ group Moms for Liberty. Trans 8-year-old sues state for not letting her use school restrooms like everyone else

An eight-year-old transgender girl and her parents are suing the Tennessee Department of Education over the state’s Accommodations for All Children Act, which bans trans students from using school bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity. ‘Social contagion’ isn’t causing more youths to be transgender, study finds

Police are four times more likely to stop transgender people for “reasonable suspicion”

A new draft report from the California Attorney General’s office indicates transgender people in the state are stopped by police at vastly different rates than cisgender men and women. The report is based on data reported from 58 of the state’s largest law enforcement agencies and shows transgender people were stopped because of “reasonable suspicion” alone —instead of a specific violation or clearly unlawful behavior — in nearly half the stops.
