Black Queer People Are Regularly Harassed and Threatened

62 percent of gay and lesbian Black Census respondents report having felt threatened or harassed at least a few times a year, while a quarter say they feel threatened or harassed once a week or more. On June 7, the GLBT Historical Society Museum unveiled a new exhibition, “Chosen Familias: LGBTQ Latinx Stories,” curated by Tina Valentin Aguirre (genderqueer, they/them). A longtime activist, poet, producer and member of the Bay Area LGBTQ Latinx community, Tina currently serves as chair of the GLBT Historical Society Board of Directors. “Chosen Familias” explores LGBTQ Latinx kinship through 20 photo albums individually curated by members of the Bay Area’s LGBTQ Latinx community documenting the specific ways they define their familias —their families. New Sonoma County Group Seems Help Assisting LGBTQ Arrivals from the Border

The Queer Asylum Accompaniment team is looking for volunteers to assist new arrivals from the border. We are in the process of receiving two people soon! Volunteering would look like: bus training, social/entertainment assists (do stuff), drivers, media/fundraising, court accompaniment, shopping and tour guides. All are welcome, Spanish Speakers make a big difference. Maybe an hour or two every other week, depending on our numbers. GLAAD Issues New Report on Anti-LGBTQ Activists Leading State Department’s New “Commission on Unalienable Rights”

GOP Senator with Anti-LGBT Record has Gay Democratic Challenger

U.S. Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) has no problem pretending to be pro-LGBT when he’s at a fundraiser hosted by a conservative LGBT organization, but he can’t hide his record from voters or from his challenger, a gay Democrat. Dan Baer, a former U.S. Ambassador under President Barack Obama, announced in April he is running for the U.S. Senate, hoping to win the Democratic nomination and the Senate seat currently held by Gardner. SB 145 Puts a Stop to LGBTQ Youth Being Placed on the Sex Offender Registry

Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 145, which ends blatant discrimination against LGBTQ youth regarding California’s sex offender registry, passed the Assembly Committee on Public Safety with a 6-2 vote. It now heads to the Assembly Committee on Appropriations. SB 145 is co-sponsored by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and Equality California, and is supported by both law enforcement and civil rights advocates. U.K. Lawmakers Approve Bid to Legalize Gay Marriage in Northern Ireland

Britain’s parliament voted on Tuesday in favor of a plan that would compel the government to legalize same-sex marriage and extend abortion rights in Northern Ireland, if the province is unable to re-establish its own devolved government. The changes passed with a large majority in parliament in London on Tuesday and turned a routine, technical piece of legislation into a vehicle that could enact major social reforms in Northern Ireland. Malawi Police Arrest 2 Leading LGBTI Activists

Police in the east African state of Malawi have arrested two of its most prominent LGBTI campaigners. Authorities arrested Gift Trapence on charges of fraud. Trapence heads the LGBTI organizaton, the Center for Development of People (CEDEP). They also arrested Anglican priest and human rights activist, Reverend Macdonald Sembereka. The two men are members of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC). Police raided Trapence’s home, just a week after he staged public demonstrations, protesting the May election results. Popular Trans Television Presenter Gunned Down in Honduras

Beloved transgender television presenter, Santiago Carvajal, died on Saturday (6 July)in Honduras after she was shot on Friday. She died at Mario Catarino Rivas Hospital in San Pedro Sula, the Central American country’s second most important city, according to El Pais. Carvajal presented La Galaxia de Santi, a critically-acclaimed magazine show on a local television channel. The social media star created well-received reports on LGBTI news.
