California COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations rise with highly contagious variant

Coronavirus activity remains on a steep rise in California, with COVID-19 infection and hospital numbers surging as the highly contagious BA.5 subvariant of omicron spreads across the country. The state’s daily case rate has held relatively flat in recent weeks, reported Tuesday by the California Department of Public Health at 36.1 per 100,000 residents, an 11% decline from one week earlier. But that is largely due to a continued drop in testing volume, with residents tending toward at-home rapid tests whose results usually go unreported to the state, as well as the July 4 holiday. Labs in California are now processing about […]

California will end arrests for loitering for prostitution

,

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday signed a new state law that will stop police from arresting people for loitering for prostitution, an issue that divided sex workers and advocates during a rare nine-month delay since state lawmakers passed the bill last year. “To be clear, this bill does not legalize prostitution,” Newsom said in a signing message. “It simply revokes provisions of the law that have led to disproportionate harassment of women” and transgender adults, he said, nothing that Black and Latino women are particularly affected. The bill will bar police in California from arresting anyone for loitering with […]

California steps into the post-Roe future

California has been preparing for this moment for months. The Golden State, along with a number of Democratic strongholds, has been working to shore up its abortion protections in anticipation of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision. But no other state has created such a comprehensive strategy — a legislative bill package with more than a dozen proposals, new funding to expand abortion access and a proposed November ballot measure that would enshrine the right to abortion in the state Constitution. The Supreme Court decision, on a 5-4 vote, clears the way […]
