Trump admin moves to end federal HIV prevention programs. ‘Catastrophic’ consequences, experts say

,

The Trump administration is preparing to eliminate all federal funding for domestic HIV prevention programs, a move that health experts say will undo decades of progress in combating the epidemic. The decision, which could be announced within the next 48 hours, would shut down the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s HIV prevention division and halt all federally funded prevention efforts, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the development, citing sources within the Department of Health and Human Services who say the move is part of a broader restructuring effort targeting federal public health […]

Texas Reps Have Introduced Over 80 Anti-LGBTQ Bills

The Dallas Morning News reports: Republicans in the Legislature filed more than 80 bills that would affect LGBTQ Texans, including many focused on public schools that would impact students, teachers and staff. Republican lawmakers filed a range of bills to ban teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity, limit the ability of teachers and students to discuss sex and gender outside the classroom, outlaw support for gender transitions and protect employees who refer to transgender students by their biological sex. “Sexual orientation and gender identity policies, they’re not about allowing people to learn and live as they choose,” said Jonathan Covey, policy […]

Janis Ian: Breaking Silence chronicles the remarkable journey of the Jewish singer-songwriter Janis Ian, beginning with her teen years when she was a precocious member of the vibrant Greenwich Village folk scene and jammed late at night with such legends as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. In the mid-70s, she ascends to major stardom with such hits as “Stars,” about the transient nature of fame (covered by Nina Simone and Cher) and “Jesse,” the wistful lament of a lonely person waiting for their lover to return home (covered to great success by the R&B singer Roberta Flack and Folk icon […]

Federal student loan restrictions will disproportionately impact LGBTQ+ adults

LGBTQ+ people are more likely to have student loans and experience economic insecurity, poverty, and disabilities, and Donald Trump‘s federal student loan restrictions are expected to disproportionately impact them.  More than one-third (35 percent) of LGBTQ+ adults ages 18 to 40 — an estimated 2.9 million — held more than $93.2 billion in federal student loans at the beginning of the Biden Administration, according to a new report from theWilliams Institute and the Point Foundation, including over half (51 percent) of transgender adults, 36 percent of cisgender LBQ women, and 28 percent of cisgender GBQ men. Through loan forgiveness, new repayment plans, the expansion of […]

LGBTQ Alabamians and Our History Will Not Be Erased

Freedom has never been a passive gift. It is a fight we carry forward, generation after generation. Living in Alabama, I’m aware that every right we enjoy was won by the people—not simply granted by lawmakers. Black elders in Montgomery remind us that the Montgomery Bus Boycott wasn’t just a symbolic protest—it was 381 days of relentless organizing, sacrifice, and resistance. These histories are blueprints for our movements today, and we need them now more than ever. As a volunteer for Montgomery Pride United, I have witnessed how the LGBTQ movement is sustained by elders who survived bar crackdowns, led […]

T-Shirt Shop Overwhelmed With Orders After Teacher Refuses To Take Down Her “Everyone Is Welcome” Sign

The Idaho State Journal reports: West Ada School District has recently come under fire after a KTVB story highlighted Lewis and Clark Middle School teacher Sarah Inama, who was asked to remove signs and posters promoting inclusivity from her classroom. The signs share the message that all students are welcome and feature hands of different skin colors and a series of words highlighted in a rainbow of colors, including “welcome,” “important,” “valued” and “equal.” West Ada cited a district policy that “ensures that classrooms remain neutral” as justification for asking Inama to remove the signs, the district said. After discussing her posters, […]
